God Never Said That
2 Timothy 4:3 (ESV)
3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound[a] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
Luke 12:4-5 (ESV)
4 “I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.[a] Yes, I tell you, fear him!

Cultural Misbeliefs About Sin

I’m not a bad person.

1 John 1:8 (ESV)
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Romans 3:10 (ESV)
10 as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;

All sin is the same.

Romans 6:23 (ESV)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

How we live influences:

  • Consequences on earth.
  • Rewards in heaven.
  • Punishment in hell.
Luke 20:47 (ESV)
47 who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
John 19:11 (ESV)
11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.”
1 Corinthians 6:18 (ESV)
18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin[a] a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

Since I’ve already done it, I might as well keep doing it.

Romans 6:1-2 (ESV)
6 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

Most Christians are educated well beyond their level of obedience.

The Good News

1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)
13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
1 John 1:8-9 (ESV)
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
